Main Responsibility

Production 

  • Ensure the efficient operation of production machinery
  • Inspect and measure product on a sampling basis at a frequency determined by quality assurance procedures
  • Record the results of all quality checks, highlight out-of-standard results and report to PQA/Shift Manager as required
  • Maintain quality standards by making the necessary adjustments and modifications to machinery
  • Maintain a supply of raw materials and inspect incoming material for defects or poor quality
  • By continued observation, locate, rectify, and record line stoppages and machine breakdowns
  • Identify and implement improvement opportunities that impact safety, spoilage, production, quality, and efficiency

 

Maintenance, Repairs and Changeovers 

  • Identify and analyse faults causing machine failure or below optimum performance, and effect adjustments / tooling changes / repairs
  • Assist in the development / improvement of the planned maintenance programme
  • Complete planned maintenance activities as per schedule
  • Conduct checks to maintain machine lubrication levels and make any necessary adjustments, if needed
  • Identify and procure spare parts as required
  • Effect improvements to the performance of the equipment on an ongoing basis, with a view to increasing output, improving quality, and reducing spoilage

 

Safety

  • Follow safe working practices as required by the Health & Safety at Work Act, PUWER and Power Press Regulations
  • Ensure high standards of safety in the area via conducting regular safety checks of machinery and actioning repairs / improvements to guarding, and so on
  • Ensure good standards of housekeeping by regular cleaning of machinery and floor. Also, disposing of scrap when required

 

Training

  • Support on-the-job training for new starters, apprentices, and colleagues


Administration

  • Maintain record and report the current condition of the line and product in the following:
    • Line logbooks and electronic system
    • Maintenance check sheets
    • Alpha-log
    • Safety observation cards
    • NWA (electronic quality system)
    • Communicate development and improvements to increase efficiency

 

Additional Duties 

  • Assist in trials, installation and commissioning of equipment as directed by immediate Manager
  • Work flexibly in any work area as far as safety and capability allows


Required Education and Qualifications

  • Level 3 mechanical apprenticeship or NVQ (motor vehicle, HGV or similar)


Required Experience, Skills and Competencies

  • Experience using workshop machinery and measuring equipment (lathe, milling, welding, cutting etc.)
  • Commitment to Health and Safety 
  • A ‘can-do’ attitude 
  • A drive for continuous improvement 

Beneficial Knowledge and Experience

  • Relevant experience in maintaining can-making equipment 


Critical Success Factors

  • Operational performance of the line 
  • Timely completion of maintenance activity 
  • Implementation of continuous improvement initiatives 

The Ideal Candidate

You’ll be a hands-on engineer with strong problem-solving skills and a commitment to delivering high standards of safety and quality. You’ll be comfortable working in a fast-paced environment and contributing to a culture of continuous improvement.

A Level 3 Mechanical Apprenticeship or NVQ (or equivalent) is essential, along with experience working with production machinery and equipment.

Location – Peterborough
Contract Type – Permanent
Working Pattern – Shift-based, site-based role (4 on 4 off)
Salary – £51,486 (inclusive of shift allowance)
Start Date – ASAP
